The Orenda by Joseph Boyden

Bird, one of the Huron’s great warriors, kidnaps a young Iroquois girl (Snow Falls) after massacring her family, in retribution for the slaughter of his wife and children years before. And so the war between the two tribes rekindles. Also caught in the tense horror is the Jesuit missionary, Christophe. This story is immense and beautiful and sorrowful and moving and compelling and…so much. I was particularly struck by the respect paid to war prisoners and the symmetry in the tribes’ beliefs.
