Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison

This novel has received some gushing accolades. I won’t echo them because I almost stopped reading when I realized it was yet another tale about abuse in a poor family. However, the writing was excellent (vivid characters and compelling dialogue), so I kept reading and I’m glad I did, because there are a couple of twists and turns that I totally didn’t expect in what had first appeared as another stock tale.
