If You Follow Me by Malena Watrous

To try to outrun the pain of her father’s suicide, Marina moves to Japan with her girlfriend so they can both teach English. They find themselves in a small town, breaking numerous cultural rules. The story is original and well-paced. I started out disliking Marina, but by the end of the novel, she had really grown on me.
